Why do people go to see a school counselor?
Everyone needs help sometimes! As humans we need to be social, we need to know we're important, and sometimes we just need to talk it out. Sometimes it really helps to have someone to talk to who isn't involved in the problem.
As a school counselor I talk to kids and teachers about all kinds of things. My job isn't to give advice, exactly, it's to listen and help you find solutions that you want.
I keep things said to me private.
Privacy means a lot to me.
I want you to be able to trust me; I don't talk to people about what you tell me because I am here to help you. I promise I will always do my best to be respectful to you and other students.
(There are exceptions - if you ask me to tell someone what you said, or if I need to do something to make sure you or someone else stays safe (like in an emergency situation), I will share what you said so I can make sure no one gets hurt.
